The Epiphone Les Paul Ultra-III is the Les Paul of the future powered by both traditional Pro-Bucker™ humbuckers plus the Shadow™ NanoMag™ pickup system that captures the Les Paul's subtle body acoustics and string harmonics. With stereo, mono, and USB outputs, plus a chromatic tuner and individual gain and tone controls for each pickup system. Now available in new Black Cherry, Midnight Ebony, Midnight Sapphire, and Vintage Sunburst.
At the heart of the Ultra-III are two pickup systems, ProBucker™ humbucker pickups and Shadow™ Germany's patented NanoMag™ system. Epiphone’s critically acclaimed ProBucker™ humbuckers recreate the “PAF” style tone of the late ‘50s and are constructed with sand cast Alnico II magnets, high quality 4 conductor lead wire vacuum wax potted to eliminate microphonics, and 18% Nickel Silver unit bases and covers. The use of Nickel Silver reduces the occurrence of eddy currents due to low conductivity and provides a more transparent and crisp output. The second system features Shadow™ Germany's patented NanoMag™ pickup, which is embedded discretely at the end of the fingerboard. The NanoMag™ low-impedance pickup features three Samarium Cobalt magnets, an air coil, and active electronics, that amplify all the Les Paul's subtle body acoustics and string harmonics. Together, you get powerful humbucker-driven rock crunch as well as shimmering acoustic-like tones and everything in-between.
The Ultra III’s humbuckers each have their own Volume control as well as a Master Tone Control. In place of a traditional neck pickup tone control is a NanoMag Volume control with Push/Pull switching to allow quick and seamless changes between each pickup system. Just push it in and you can quickly toggle between traditional magnetic, NanoMag, or both pickup systems with no delay and no "pop." Two additional LED's on the pickup-mounting ring provide a visual indicator as to which pickup system is active (Red=NanoMag; Blue-Magnetic or Red/Blue=Both.) You can pre-set the overall gain and tone of your NanoMag pickup on the back, by the 9-volt battery compartment.
Built discretely into the bridge pickup mounting ring is a full-function chromatic tuner. Push the ON/OFF button and sound is immediately muted when the tuner is activated. Eleven color-coded LED's identify the note as well as whether it's sharp, flat, or in-tune.
The Ultra-III features three different outputs. By using the standard 1/4" MONO output, both the ProBuckerTM humbuckers and NanoMagTM pickups are mixed into one signal. When you plug another 1/4" cable into the Ultra III’s STEREO output, the humbuckers are routed through one cable and the NanoMag the other. By using the STEREO output, you can send the humbuckers to your favorite guitar amp and the NanoMag to a PA or acoustic guitar amp. Use the NanoMag Volume & Push/Push switching to alternate between the two outputs. The third output is for a USB cable, so you can plug directly into your computer and use guitar applications such as Native Instruments GuitarRig™ 4LE (downloadable from Epiphone.com). With Native Instruments GuitarRig 4LE, you can play your guitar through a variety of simulated amplifiers and effects while listening through your computer speakers or headphones. GuitarRig also features a recorder, a metronome, a tuner and more.
