Tama's Starphonic PBR146 is a 14 x 6 brass snare built around articulation and control. The 1.2mm brass shell pairs with Tama's proprietary Super Sensitive Hi-Carbon snare wires-a 20-strand configuration engineered for crisp attack and tight response. Unlike stock wires, these are contoured to sit closer to the snare-side head, delivering brighter tone and greater sensitivity across the dynamic range. The drum's engineering centres on precision mechanics. A patented Linear-Drive strainer moves vertically without the typical wire-slap artefact, while a ratchet tension adjuster locks off in 0.083mm increments for micro-tuning. The Grooved Hoop combines vintage aesthetics with modern bearing geometry. Freedom Lugs allow the claw hooks to tilt away from the hoop for rapid head changes. A detachable butt plate lets you swap the snare-side head while preserving wire tension-loosen two screws, replace the head, reattach, and calibration returns to zero. Non-loosening rubber gaskets inside each claw hook prevent tension bolts from creeping during playing. This matters for touring and studio work alike, where a drum that holds its tuning becomes invisible-you focus on playing, not maintenance. The grooved hoop design also reduces shell resonance bleed, tightening the definition of each stroke.
