Gibson's J-45 has defined the full-size acoustic since 1942, earning its "Workhorse" status through straightforward design and studio ubiquity. This Century 12-Fret variant reimagines that formula with a 12-fret neck-to-body joint instead of the standard 14-fret configuration. That shift shortens overall neck length and repositions the bridge plate deeper into the body, closer to the widest part of the top, allowing the soundboard to move more efficiently and deliver a warm, punchy, resonant voice that responds especially well to fingerstyle and lighter picking dynamics.
Construction pairs a mahogany back and sides with a Sitka spruce top, dressed in single-ply cream binding. The mahogany neck employs Gibson's SlimTaper® 12-Fret profile and connects to the body via compound dovetail joint with hot hide glue, honouring traditional acoustic build methods. A 19-fret rosewood fretboard carries simple mother-of-pearl dot inlays. Hardware includes open-back Golden Age tuners with cream buttons, bone nut and saddle, TUSQ® bridge pins, and a sloped rectangle rosewood bridge echoing earliest J-45 models. Hand-sprayed satin nitrocellulose lacquer finish and a slotted pickguard complete the vintage-inspired spec. Scale length measures 628.7 mm.
The 12-fret configuration was historically reserved for limited Gibson Custom runs and artist collaborations, making this production Century model a significant accessibility shift. Players seeking the distinctive tonal character of a 12-fret flat-top–greater responsiveness in the midrange and enhanced sustain–now have a standard production option. The guitar ships in a premium Century Collection tweed hardshell case and is available in right and left-handed configurations.
