Four Tone Shaping Preamps with selectable Warmth, Focus, and Shine modes form the sonic foundation of this 12-in/6-out USB audio interface from Universal Audio. Built by the team behind the Apollo series, the Volt 4P Max combines 32-bit/192kHz conversion with onboard Max Processing that delivers six compression presets inspired by classic 1176 and LA-2A hardware. Each preamp mode adds tube, solid-state, or British Class-A inspired character directly to the signal path, creating more than 18 unique recording combinations when paired with the compression presets. Connectivity extends well beyond the four mic/line inputs: dual front-panel Hi-Z instrument inputs accommodate guitar and bass, while ADAT/S-PDIF expansion allows up to eight additional channels via external preamps or converters. MIDI I/O integrates hardware synthesisers and drum machines into the recording chain. The full-colour Smart Display provides real-time gain-reduction metering, Auto-Gain calibration, and Clip Protection feedback, removing guesswork from signal optimisation. Two independent headphone outputs, speaker switching between main and alternate monitor systems, and a built-in talkback microphone support multi-person recording sessions and A/B monitoring workflows. USB-C connectivity ensures compatibility with Mac and Windows systems, while loopback functionality routes system audio back into the DAW for podcast production and streaming applications. The included software bundle provides LUNA Digital Audio Workstation, Melodyne Essential pitch correction, UAD plug-ins, and UJAM virtual instruments straight out of the box.
