The Gibson Thunderbird™ Bass stands as a landmark design in electric bass history. Penned by automotive stylist Ray Dietrich in 1963, its asymmetrical reverse body shape remains visually distinctive six decades on. The current iteration pairs that iconic silhouette with modern playability: a solid mahogany body retains the original neck–through aesthetic via a raised centre section, yet features a glued–in set neck with SlimTaper™ profile for comfort and speed. The Non–Reverse headstock streamlines tuning, whilst Hipshot® Ultralite® Mini Clover machines and a Supertone bridge deliver precision and stable action adjustment.
Tonally, the Thunderbird’s two EB Bass humbucker™ pickups dominate the low–end landscape. Each pickup routes to an independent volume control, enabling solo operation or blended ratios for tonal flexibility; a master tone knob shapes the overall character. The dual–pickup architecture and separate controls allow players to favour neck or bridge pickup response depending on application–aggressive slap work typically favours the bridge unit’s snap, whilst jazz or vintage contexts suit the warmth of the neck position. The 3–ply white pickguard houses the signature Thunderbird logo. A Gibson hardshell case ensures safe transport and storage.
